St Petersburg Explosion - At least 9 people killed in Russia 

A nail bomb has killed at least 9 people and injured at least 50 people in St Peterburg - more details below. 

A nail bomb has killed at least 9 people and injured at least 50 people - including children. 

The blast took place in a metro carriage in St Petersburg where President Putin is also visiting for talks with the President of Belarus. 

After the incident he spoke and confirmed that "there are dead and injured - I have already spoken to the head of our special services and they are working to ascertain the cause of the blasts." 
"The causes are not clear - it's too early but we will look into all possible causes - terrorism as well as common crime." 

According to numerous reports, President Putin wanted to visit the scene of the aftermath however was held back by security services. 

Early reports had suggested that there had been multiple explosions - on different carriages however since the event, officials have confirmed that it was just one blast and another 'package' was destroyed at the scene. 

Witnesses report that they saw a man leave a briefcase on one carriage before moving onto the second carriage before the huge explosion took place. 

The explosion was in fact a nail bomb - this is used for more impact and to create more harm to people around. 

The security across Russia has now been heightened and there were reports in Russian media that 3 other metro stations had been searched due to reports of suspicious packages too.
