Jonathan Demme who was the oscar-winning director of 'The Silence of The Lambs' has died in New York at the age of 73.

Jonathan Demme, the oscar-winning director has died from complications from Oesophageal caner - his publicist has confirmed.
Following the announcement, his publicist released the following statement.
"Sadly, I can confirm that Jonathan passed away early this morning in his Manhattan apartment, surrounded by his wife, Joanne Howard and three children."
"He died from complications from oesophageal cancer and is survived by his children - Ramona, age 29 and her husband James Molloy, Brooklyn, age 26 and Jos, age 21."
"There will be a private family funeral and any further plans will be announced later."

The Silence of the Lambs was released on February 14th, 1991 - it was only the third film to win an academy award in all top five categories.

The film is also the first Best Picture Winner which is widely considered to be a horror film and the third to be nominated in the category.

The sequel to the film was Hannibal (released in 2001) with two prequels - Red Dragon and Hannibal Rising.
